You may not be familiar with all of the items on your auto service center’s menu board so here is a quick description of some of the typical services that might be listed. Remember, the board is there for reference; speak to your KRAKEN AUTO service advisor about other possible needs or services.

Fuel system cleaning: Over time, the fuel system gets gum and varnish built up. A fuel system cleaning gets rid of that and cleans out the fuel injectors. Saves fuel as well, by the way.

Headlamp replacement: Halogen and standard headlamps gradually fade. When one burns out, replace both so they’ll have the same brightness. Also, if your headlamp lenses are yellowed or cloudy, you can have them professionally restored to like new-condition.

Inspections: Calgary area drivers get inspections for many reasons. Maybe they’re going on a trip or just want to make sure their vehicle’s ready for summer or winter. Maybe they just bought a used car and want to give it the once over. An inspection may reveal some things that are broken or are getting close to having a problem.

Oil change – there are several options: Some Calgary auto centers offer just an oil change and new filter as an option. Most will also check and top off all of your other fluids and do a quick visual inspection with a full service oil change. There may also be options for upgrades to synthetic and other types of oil.

PCV valve: PCV stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. It’s a little part that releases pressure from the vehicle engine. It can get gummed up and that can lead to engine damage. Just needs to be changed now and then.

Power steering service: Often overlooked. Our service advisor will evacuate the old fluid, clean out the system and replace it with clean fluid. Keeps the system running well for a long time.

Serpentine belt: That’s the belt that powers the vehicle engine’s accessories like the alternator, air conditioner, power steering and brakes. Calgary drivers will want to replace the serpentine belt before it breaks or wears down too much, because that’ll lead to other problems.

Shocks and struts: This starts with an inspection of the suspension components. Shocks last a long time and wear out slowly, so many drivers don’t notice when it’s time to change them. If they’re worn or leaking, they need to be replaced.

Transmission service: This involves removing the transmission fluid and replacing it with clean fluid. It’s like an oil change for your transmission.

Tire rotation and wheel balancing: The tires are rotated from front to back using the recommended rotation pattern. This helps tires wear more evenly. Wheels need to be balanced from time to time to keep them turning without any wobble or bounce. Helps the ride and saves tire wear.

           Water Pump Cavitation

Your cooling system is vital to your engine’s operation and to its long life. In fact, the most prevalent mechanical failure involves the cooling system. To put that in perspective, the most prevalent overall vehicle failure is tire related.

One cooling system trouble Calgary drivers should be aware of is cavitation. Cavitation happens as the water pump impeller spins super fast. Then tiny vapor bubbles are created. When these little bubbles collapse, they create an intense shock wave. Over time, these shocks actually start to damage the surfaces on the water pump and can result in failure.

Cooling system engineers are constantly working on pump designs, different cooling system materials, and coolant formulations to reduce the trouble. Don’t be discouraged that the options above may be out of your control, there are certainly some things you can do as well to ensure the longevity of your water pump system.

One thing is to use the car maker recommended coolant/antifreeze. It will have features that work well with the water pump and other components of your cooling system. It is formulated to resist the creation of vapor bubbles and has additives that protect internal surfaces from cavitation damage.

Also, it’s vital to correct all cooling system leaks ASAP. Even minor leaks mean that the proper cooling system pressure cannot be maintained, allowing vapor bubbles to develop. All ratty cooling system parts, like the water pump, radiator pressure cap, and thermostat, should be replaced with quality parts.

If you observe any cooling system troubles like overheating, a cooling system warning light, or visible coolant leaks, bring your car in to KRAKEN AUTO for a cooling system inspection. We’ll test the coolant for both the proper protection setting (coolant/water mix) and the proper pH level to protect your cooling system components. Our qualified technicians can get to the bottom of the trouble and carry out the necessary repairs for our Calgary drivers.

To Turbo or Not To Turbo

           Turbocharged Engine Maintenance

Nobody loves wasting money. Gasoline costs money, so using less saves money. One of the ways vehicle manufacturers are helping you save gasoline (and money) is with smaller, turbocharged engines.

You might have heard of turbos associated with race cars, but more and more everyday street vehicles are getting into the turbo game. The big advantage is that you can get the same horsepower out of an engine that uses less fuel. Neat trick, huh?

Today, we see small turbocharged four-cylinder engines that make more power than large displacement V-8 engines of a decade ago. Here's how a turbo manages that trick. A turbocharged vehicle uses a turbine that is turned by exhaust gas. That compresses air that goes into the engine. More air means more oxygen with which to burn fuel, which makes it more powerful.

Modern turbocharges engines are very reliable. Turbos are offered in cars, trucks, and SUVs. Keep in mind that because they are more complex, turbocharged engines can be more expensive to repair. The good news is you will likely be saving fuel without sacrificing performance.

Turbos spin at very high speeds. They require a constant supply of oil to lubricate their bearings. For this reason, changing your oil on time is critical. Just a small amount of oil sludge could block the turbo oil passage and lead to expensive damage. Also, most turbocharged engines require the use of synthetic motor oil that meets or exceeds strict standards to withstand the stress and high heat. Always use the type and specification of oil your vehicle manufacturer recommends.

The technicians at Kraken Auto are trained to inspect all systems associated with a turbo engine. If you are currently driving a turbocharged vehicle, make sure you keep all your maintenance up to date.

With the fuel economy advantages they offer, turbocharged vehicles are definitely here to stay.

The Fallacy of Cheap Tires Sold in Calgary

What Price Level of Tire is Best for Your Needs?

New tires are a big ticket item for most Calgary drivers. You’re not only concerned about the price, but you want to know that it’ll be a long time before you need to buy new tires again.

And of course there’s the safety aspect as well. The tires do a lot of work, they carry the weight of the vehicle and you and your passengers around Calgary. They need to be up to the task. You want to be sure they hold the road and provide good traction. Calgary drivers who carry heavy loads or tow a trailer need a high load tires to be up for the job.

The tire professionals think it’s important that Calgary drivers understand the effect of price on a tire’s performance and durability. The major tire brands sold in Calgary that you’re familiar with are known as Tier 1 tires. These tires are well-engineered and very high quality. Comparable tires are usually in the same price range from brand to brand.

Stepping down in price you come to private label tires. Some large Calgary tire store chains carry tires with the chain’s own brand. It’s important to know that most private label tires sold in the Calgary area are built by the same Tier 1 brands that you are familiar with, so they are a quality product.

The lowest priced tires on the market are Tier 3 tires. These tend to be imported from China or South America. Since you get what you pay for, you can’t expect a Tier 3 tire to deliver the same performance and durability as the others. Hey, sometimes the budget will only allow for a Tier 3 tire. That’s OK because it’s a good thing to be driving with safe, new tires than pushing your old tires beyond their safety limits. And while it’s good counsel to buy as much tire as you can afford, because it will be much less expensive in the long run, tier three tires quality has risen substantially in recent years. Your tires are the only part of your vehicle that touch the Calgary road. That said, you’re only as safe as your tires are well built. Buy value – not price.

It’s comforting for Calgary drivers to know that KRAKEN AUTO has exacting standards and procedures for taking care of your car. There are inspection procedures and auto service procedures.

When Calgary drivers come in for a routine service like an oil change, our service advisors will give things the once over. They look to see if your windshield wipers or air filter need to be replaced. They’ll check what your car maker recommends be done at your odometer reading.

They’ll come to you with suggestions for things to be taken care of, along with a prioritization, so you’ll know if there’s anything urgent. They will also let you know of things that will need attention in the coming months.

Look, it’s really like going to the dentist for regular check-ups. No one wants to hear that they need dental work done – it’s unpleasant and costs money. Same thing with your car or truck.

But think about those times when you haven’t been to the dentist for five years and go in with a screaming toothache. That little cavity that could’ve easily been fixed has turned into a root canal. And you can bet that there’s more than one thing on the to-do list when you leave from that visit.

There are so many things on your vehicle that are fairly inexpensive to take care of when they’re scheduled but can lead to very pricey and inconvenient repairs if ignored.

Think of the car maintenance schedule in your car maker owner’s manual like the checklist your dentist goes through when you get your semi-annual check-up. The checklist makes sure things aren’t overlooked. Add in a trained eye, and you’ll catch most things before they leave you out of service.

Calgary drivers know things need to be done on their vehicles. When you’re working with a service center you trust, like KRAKEN AUTO in Calgary, you can feel that their recommendations are in your best interest. Now, open wide . . .

Your Vehicle's Other Power Plant

           Alternator Replacement

Your vehicle's engine is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a power plant. But it has another power source that is vital as well: the alternator.

The alternator is what puts out the electricity that powers such things as your lights, power windows, sound system, and navigation. Maybe you've started seeing those electrical components behaving in strange ways. Maybe your power windows are going up and down a little bit more slowly than they used to. Or perhaps your engine doesn't start as easily or is misfiring.

Other signs of a failing alternator are headlights that are either brighter or dimmer than usual. If your battery keeps going dead, it could be that the alternator isn't recharging it.

The alternator has to get its power from somewhere, and in vehicles with internal combustion engines, that power comes from a drive belt powered by the engine. Sometimes that belt can fail. If you hear a whining sound, it could mean bearings in the alternator aren't turning as freely as they used to. You could even notice a burning smell. Oh, and when you see your battery light illuminated on your dash (it looks like a rectangle with a - and + inside), it may be warning you that your alternator is not healthy.

Bring your vehicle in to us for a diagnosis if you notice any of these symptoms. If your alternator is bad, we can recommend a new or remanufactured one to replace it. Some new alternators are warranted for life and remanufactured units usually are guaranteed as well.

It's important to your vehicle's health to have its alternator putting out the right power consistently. It may not be as well known as the other power plant under the hood, but it's a vital part of helping your vehicle run the way it is designed to.

Make Sure to Have Your Vehicle Winter Ready

Every year, your vehicle needs to be ready for our AB winter. The last thing we Calgary drivers want is to get stranded out in the cold. We need our vehicles to be safe and reliable. It’s a good idea to get caught up on any neglected maintenance items anytime, but the stakes are higher in the winter for AB drivers.

There are some specific and vital things that we need to do to have our vehicle ready for winter. The most obvious is having the antifreeze checked. If the antifreeze protection is not set correctly it can’t properly protect your engine, radiator and hoses from freezing. If your vehicle does not seem to be making enough heat to keep you warm, your antifreeze level may be low or you could have a thermostat problem. Get it checked out at KENSINGTON AUTO in Calgary. If you are due for a cooling system service, now is a perfect time to have it done.

In the cold months we always worry about being able to stop in time when it’s slick out on AB area roads. The first thing for drivers to remember is to slow down and allow plenty of room to stop. A thorough brake inspection at KENSINGTON AUTO will reveal if the pads or any other parts need replacing. Check with your KENSINGTON AUTO service advisor to see if it is time to replace your brake fluid. It accumulates water over time which really messes with your stopping power.

It is also vital to have your battery tested. A battery’s cranking power really drops with the temperature. If your battery is weak in the fall, it may not be up to winter in AB.

You should always have a blanket or something to keep you and your passengers warm if you get stranded when it's cold. If you will be leaving the Calgary area and venturing away from civilization, pack more items such as food and water to help you survive. Keeping at least half a tank of gas is vital if you get stuck and need to run the car to keep warm and it will help keep your gas lines from freezing up.

It’s a really good idea for Calgary drivers to replace their wiper blades in the fall before the AB winter storms. If you live where there’s a lot of snow and ice, you might want a special winter blade that resists freezing up. And be sure to have enough windshield washer fluid.

The final thing for Calgary drivers to consider is their tires. Any tire can lose pressure over time, up to 1/2 kg every six or eight weeks. For every 5.6 degrees Celsius the temperature drops in Calgary you lose another 1/2 kg of pressure. So if it was 26.7 degrees outside in Calgary when you checked your tire pressure two months ago and now it’s 4.4 degrees out, you could be down 2 kg of pressure. That’s enough to be an essential safety issue and it's also hard on your gas mileage. You may need special winter tires as well. Your KENSINGTON AUTO tire professional can help you find the right tire design for your Calgary expected road conditions.

If you’re getting winter tires in Calgary, it is always best to put them on all four wheels. If you are only getting two, it might be best to put them on the rear even if you have a front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive vehicle. This is a very important safety measure recommended by tire manufacturers. Sliding or fish-tailing on ice and snow is a matter of not having enough traction at the rear end. That is why your newest tires should probably always be on the rear. Check with your KENSINGTON AUTO service advisor.

           Lubricating Your U-Joints

If your vehicle’s power goes to the rear wheels, then you have something called U-joints in the drivetrain. U-joints are connectors that allow the rotating power from your vehicle’s engine to deliver its power through a driveshaft to make the rear wheels rotate. You need U-joints because the surfaces you drive on aren’t perfectly flat, and the driveshaft has to allow for some flexibility when you are traveling over uneven surfaces.

As you can imagine, the U-joints have to move and flex a lot as your vehicle is going down the road. They have bearings in them to allow that flexibility, and those bearings are lubricated when your vehicle is made. Some U-joints have lifetime lubrication and are not designed to be serviced. When they fail, they have to be replaced. Others have grease fittings on them that need periodic lubricating by a technician at intervals recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

There are signs you can look for that your U-joints need attention. You may hear a clunk when the gears shift into drive or reverse. You may feel your vehicle vibrate as you move down the road. Other signs are leaks at the back of your transmission or a banging sound right before you lose power. Sometimes, though, if you wait until you notice these symptoms, the U-joints may already be damaged.

That’s why it’s important that your vehicle’s U-joints be periodically inspected and lubricated. At the same time, a technician should thoroughly inspect the driveshaft and other connected components.

Keep your U-joints in good shape, and both of U will continue to enjoy years of reliable transportation.

Motor Oil - The Synthetic Advantage

           Synthetic Oil vs Conventional Oil

You’ve probably already heard that regular oil changes are extremely important for the health of your vehicle’s engine. That’s sound advice. But what you might not know is when it comes to motor oil, the real thing may not be the best thing for your engine.

There are different types of motor oil:

Conventional oil, extracted from the ground and refined.

Synthetic oil, manufactured from high-quality base oils and artificially-made chemical compounds.

Synthetic oil blend, a mixture of conventional and synthetic oils.

The first thing you need to know is that most new engines require synthetic oil. If synthetic oil is recommended for your car – you MUST use it.

For the rest, there are many advantages to using synthetic oil over conventional oil.

Synthetic oil provides better protection for your engine while helping it to perform better.

Conventional oil breaks down over time, while synthetic oil lasts longer.

Synthetics can stand higher temperature extremes, both heat, and cold.

Synthetic oil can be a better choice if you live in an extremely hot or cold climate or put a lot of strain on your engine by towing or carrying heavy loads. It also may be good for older engines that sometimes have a tendency to develop sludge.

Synthetic oil is a more expensive option, but you likely won’t have to have your oil changed as often. Some synthetics are recommended to last 10,000-15,000 miles/16,000-24,000 km between changes.

You might also consider a synthetic blend that gives you some of the advantages of synthetic oil at a lower cost. Have a talk with your service adviser about recommendations for what will best suit your vehicle and driving habits.

It’s interesting to note that in recent years, more than one out of two vehicle owners are opting for synthetic oil or a synthetic blend when they get their oil changed. Sounds like they’re on to something. In the long run, if you have fewer oil changes with synthetics, you’ll use less oil, a bonus for our environment.

Putting a Stop to Brake Problems

It's safe to say that most drivers take their brakes for granted. You press on the brake pedal and the vehicle slows down or stops. It's easy to see why it is so important for your vehicle's brakes to be working correctly. Brakes are an important safety feature of any vehicle.

When it comes to your brakes working correctly, maintaining them regularly will ensure that you will always be able to slow or stop your vehicle in any situation, whether on a sunny day on dry pavement or a bad weather day on slippery surfaces. And that is why regular brake service is such a sound investment for all drivers. The combo of brakes" and "surprises" doesn't usually end well.

You might already know about some of the parts of your braking system. Terms familiar to you might be pads, rotors, and calipers. In short, the calipers press the pads, which in turn contact the rotors. The resulting friction slows your vehicle. Another type of brake uses a drum and brake shoes. But both count on friction to work.

When you come in to have us check your brakes, we'll make sure those parts are all in good working together and meet the specifications of your vehicle manufacturer. But there are other important components as well. Your brake system has several parts of a hydraulic system that uses fluids to conduct the pressure you put on the brake pedal to the brakes on all of your wheels. There are hoses and lines that can sometimes degrade because of road salt or debris.

Last and not least, your vehicle has an emergency or parking brake. It's something you'll need to prevent your vehicle from rolling when you park on a steep incline. Your parking brake also is an important backup if your hydraulic brakes fail.

Give your brakes some tender loving care with regular service and they'll be there when you need them.

Diesel Maintenance

           Diesel Maintenance at Kensington Auto

A lot of Calgary drivers are excited about the new diesel engines that are becoming available in passenger cars and SUV’s and they’re curious about the preventive maintenance requirements for diesels. Drivers may not know that diesel engines have long been used extensively in Europe and Asia. In fact, in some markets, there’re nearly as many diesel powered passenger cars as there are fuel powered cars.

You may ask, why has it taken so long getting them to North America? There are a bunch of reasons like fuel tax policies and such, but the biggest hurtle was that North American diesel fuel had a high sulfur content – too high for the latest generation of highly refined diesel engines. Recent mandates to remove sulfur now opens North America up to the engines the rest of the world’s been enjoying for a long time.

Why are diesels so popular worldwide? Well, for starters, diesels get up to 30% better fuel economy than standard fuel engines. And they last a lot longer. And modern diesel engines are refined, quiet and powerful – and there’s none of that black smoke we used to see. Some Calgary drivers may think that diesels create more pollution. But, you need to rethink diesels. Environmental pollution standards for diesel cars and light trucks are scheduled to be as strict as they are for other fuel powered vehicles.

A modern diesel engine is as clean as a fuel engine. And, there are not a lot of trade offs with diesel in terms of performance. A modern passenger car diesel is very smooth, quiet and quick. Most Calgary drivers wouldn’t notice any difference. For those folks who tow trailers and haul heavy loads, diesels will be an improvement.

Now diesel engines are heavy duty, so they cost more than fuel engines. But they get better fuel economy – so the break-even point is largely dependent on the difference between regular fuel and diesel prices at your Calgary pump and how many kilometers you drive. And diesels have a higher resale value.

Now, let’s get back to diesel maintenance. Diesels do require very clean fuel, air and oil, so their filters are much higher capacity than standard fuel filters and cost more. The engine air filter needs to be changed more frequently as well. Repair costs in Calgary are similar. As with standard fuel engines, proper maintenance is the key to long engine life and to avoiding repairs. So pretty much what we have come to expect with fuel powered vehicles; coolant system service, transmission service, power brakes, power steering, differential, filters, fuel system, and so on. And the payoff for you, if you’re one of the Calgary drivers that likes to keep your vehicles for a long time, is that a properly maintained diesel engine can last for hundreds of thousands of kilometers.

Making Sense of the O2 Sensor

           Oxygen Sensor Replacement

As you know, today’s vehicles rely on a lot of computers in them to keep them running clean and efficiently. Those computers depend on information delivered by several sensors throughout the engine and exhaust system. And one of the most important is the oxygen sensor.

Known as the O2 sensor for short, it looks for too much unburned oxygen that has made it into the exhaust. That signals something isn’t right with the engine’s air-fuel mixture. The sensor sends signals to the engine’s computers, which can then make adjustments to make sure the engine is running as it was designed to.

Some vehicles can have several O2 sensors, and since they can measure oxygen at various points in the combustion/exhaust process, the computers can pinpoint where the problems lie. For example, an O2 sensor can detect how much oxygen is coming out of the engine’s combustion chamber, and another one can measure oxygen coming out of the catalytic converter.

As you can see, it’s important that those O2 sensors are working correctly. If they’re not, the computer is getting bad information. Garbage in, garbage out. That can result in lousy fuel economy and excess pollution coming out of your tailpipe. It can also affect your vehicle’s performance. Sometimes your Check Engine light will illuminate when one of your O2 sensors goes bad. Or you may notice your engine misfiring or idling roughly.

If you notice any of these symptoms, bring your vehicle on in, and a technician will pinpoint the trouble spot.

Extend the Life of Your Battery

Batteries are a huge part of modern life. I mean, how many battery chargers do you have?

Of course, our purpose here is to talk about your car battery. When people come into KENSINGTON AUTO and need a new battery, they're really not that happy about having to spend the money. But the fact is that 70 percent of batteries don't make it for 4 years.

There are some things that you can do to extend the life of your battery. First, keep it clean. If you see it getting dirty or greasy, let us know and we can clean it off. A dirty battery runs hotter and that shortens its life. If your battery terminals are corroded, let us take a look at that too. We can clean them, and if the corrosion has gotten into the battery cables, we can replace them.

Also running your battery way down is bad for it. Things like, running the headlights or watching a DVD player with the car turned off can deeply deplete your battery. The typical battery can only take about 10 of those deep cycle depletions before it gives up.

Because we often take short trips around Calgary with lots of stops for errands, our batteries can end up not getting fully recharged just by driving around. That also shortens battery life. You can hook up a good quality automatic battery charger at home from time to time. We recommend charging once a month during hot months and every three months during cold months.

Now when it's finally time to get a new battery, KENSINGTON AUTO can help you find the right replacement. We will always make sure to meet your manufacturer's recommendations. Now if you have special needs like, live in a very cold climate or run a lot of electrical accessories, we can look at an upgrade that'll give you the power you need.

How Long Will My Brakes Last?

           Brake Maintenance

If you feel a slight shudder or vibration coming through your brake pedal when you stop, it could be a sign you need some brake work done. That gets you thinking, how long should my brakes last anyway?

It depends on a lot of factors. But for discussion's sake, let's talk about the components that wear out most often, the pads and rotors.

One factor is how you drive. If you drive on highways a lot, you won't use your brakes as much as, say, someone who lives in the city and is in the middle of a lot of stop-and-go traffic.

Do you drive a lot in the mountains? Do you tow a trailer or haul heavy loads? Those driving habits will all wear down your pads and rotors more quickly than someone who doesn't put that extra friction on their brake components.

Do you love jackrabbit starts and squealing stops? That will wear out your brakes more quickly than smoother driving habits.

Do you drive a hybrid or electric vehicle? In that case, you may have regenerative brakes that help your vehicle stop and may reduce wear and tear on the pads and rotors.

How long will your brakes will last depend on all these different things, and there's no hard and fast rule. In addition to that pulsating feel we mentioned at the beginning of this, here are a few other signs you might need some brake work:

You must push harder on the brake pedal than you used to.

Your brakes squeak, grind, or rattle when you apply them.

Your vehicle pulls to one side when you put on the brakes.

Your NAPA Service Centre can inspect your brakes and tell you when it's time to or replace your brake pads or rotors. A technician will also check the other wear components in your brake system that may require repair. When it comes to brake issues, it's a lot better to know: and it’s better (and can save money) to know earlier rather than later.

Imagine waking up one morning with a stomach ache. You pick up the phone, call the doctor’s office and say, “I’ve got a really bad tummy ache. How much will it cost to make me feel better?” Of course you wouldn’t do that. You know that there could be a lot of reasons for your symptoms and that the doctor will have to examine you, ask some questions, and probably run some tests before she can tell you what’s wrong and give you treatment options.

This same scenario plays out every day at AB auto repair facilities. When the cause of the concern isn’t obvious, the car will need to undergo a diagnostic examination. The typical car has about 30,000 parts, including several networked computers and kilometers of wiring. Finding exactly what is wrong can be very complicated and take some time. The most experienced technicians at KENSINGTON AUTO are the ones that tackle the difficult diagnostic jobs. Once they have determined the cause of the trouble, they can work out the plan for how to fix it, and tell you how much it will cost.

When you think about it this way, it makes perfect sense that, 1) the service advisor cannot provide an estimate before the diagnosis is done, and 2) there is a charge for auto diagnostic services in Calgary. You expect to pay for an office visit to the doctor and for any necessary tests before you can be presented with your treatment options and costs; same goes for your vehicle.

We know it can be frustrating when something is wrong with your car and you aren’t sure what is going to be involved in getting it fixed. At KENSINGTON AUTO we are passionate about helping you through the process; communicating with you at each step along the way. We have highly trained diagnostic technicians and technologically advanced diagnostic equipment to uncover the cause of your trouble. We use quality replacement parts to help make sure you stay on the road after the repair is done. That’s our prescription for automotive peace of mind.

           Multi-Point Inspection

In a perfect world we Calgary drivers would get into our cars in the morning and go about our business with no traffic on smooth roads. All the lights would be green, the air would be pure and a litre of fuel would cost a dollar. In that world, following car maker vehicle maintenance recommendations might be all you would need to worry about.

But of course, that’s not the way it works. There’s dust and pollution in Calgary air, traffic jams and potholes. Issues with your car don’t come on a schedule, they just happen. That’s why KENSINGTON AUTO offers multi-point vehicle inspections.

Our well-trained and experienced service advisors know what to look for and often uncover both minor and major troubles for busy Calgary drivers.

There may be many kilometers to go before you’re scheduled for a new air filter – but if it’s clogged up now we’ll find out and fix it. If our service advisor observes an uneven tire wear pattern, they can investigate the root cause. You may not even remember that curb you hit two months ago that bent your tie rod end, but damage was done and a trained eye can see the effects.

The multi-point inspection gives us an opportunity to inspect for the unexpected. We can help take care of little troubles before they become pricey. Your car will perform better, be more efficient and safer. This is all part of the service and care we incorporate into our standard KENSINGTON AUTO procedures.

We've all heard a car or truck in our Calgary neighborhood that needs a new muffler. But there's more to the exhaust system than just the muffler.

The exhaust system has three main functions:

To safely get hot exhaust from the engine out the tailpipe

Treats the exhaust to remove harmful pollutants

            Muffle the engine noise

Exhaust fumes are poisonous. You don't want it getting into the passenger compartment. For example, carbon monoxide can be deadly. That's why you should never run your engine in a closed garage. If you have a leak in the exhaust system, exhaust could get into the passenger cabin and make you sick or even kill you.

If you smell exhaust in the vehicle, roll down your windows and get it inspected. You may smell or see exhaust coming from the engine compartment or under the vehicle if you have a leak. Sometimes the sound from an exhaust leak is loud and obvious. Sometimes it's a ticking sound when you start the engine that goes away as you drive. That could be a small crack or a bad fitting that leaks when it's cold but seals up when the metal heats and expands.

Now, let's address the environmental issues for our community. Exhaust fumes contain a number of pollutants and particulates. The catalytic converter scrubs some of those harmful substances. And diesel vehicles have systems to deal with soot.

Catalytic converters eventually wear out and need to be replaced. They're expensive so you want to help them last as long as possible by keeping the fuel system clean and replacing your air filter. These components need to be tested for function with an emissions test from time to time.

And that leaves the muffler. The beauty of getting a new muffler is that you can suit your taste: Some want whisper quiet and others like a little rumble. And some like a roar when they drive down our Calgary streets.
The Most Important Safety Item On Your Vehicle - Brakes

If someone tells you to put the brakes on something, you know it means stop. And stopping is one of the most important safety maneuvers you can do in any vehicle. That means your brakes have to work properly.

Let's face it. You stop dozens of times every time you drive. And over time, that takes its toll on your brakes. Friction is what stops your vehicle. Most newer vehicles have disc brakes, and the parts that wear out the fastest are those that rub against each other every time you stop, the rotors and the pads.

The rotors are discs that rotate with the wheels, and the pads are removable surfaces that make contact with the rotors to slow or stop your vehicle. Bits of both wear off each time you stop, and when enough of either (or both) lose too much material, your brakes become unable to safely slow or stop your vehicle.

The pads usually are the parts that wear out first. Signs that your brakes might be getting worn are:

You hear grinding, squeaking, or clicking when you apply them

It takes a longer distance to stop

Your pedal vibrates when you brake

The front of your vehicle pulls to one side when you brake

If you notice any of these, bring your car to us so we can have a technician inspect your brakes. Most brake pads have a wear indicator that indicates it's time they should be replaced. The technician who is checking things out will also look at your rotors for wear, as well as other brake system components.

With regular inspections and maintenance, you'll be sure that when you need to stop, your vehicle will be up to the task.

It’s very important to your Calgary service center to keep drivers happy and on the road. You might be surprised at the amount of money service centers spend every year to make sure their technicians are properly trained.

Calgary area service centers, including KENSINGTON AUTO, offer a variety of car care services to many kinds of vehicles. They need to be up to date on the latest techniques and parts so that they can care for your car properly. Centers subscribe to data services that list the high quality parts and fluids recommended by your manufacturer.

And each KENSINGTON AUTO service has a checklist of standard procedures. Your service advisors follow these procedures so they can safely deliver a consistent level of high-quality service to their valued customers.

Some of our services require the use of specialized equipment. Technicians are trained extensively on this equipment so that they can service your car quickly and efficiently.

Classroom, video and hands-on training is provided by KENSINGTON AUTO and outside trainers. It’s not only important that service advisors be able to perform a given task, they also need to be thoroughly trained in inspection and diagnostic techniques. One of the great services they perform is to spot potential problems before they become serious.

The automotive service industry has standards for classifying and communicating problems to customers. For example, it’s one thing to learn that your car maker recommends that you change your serpentine belt every 50,000 kilometers and another to learn that the belt is on the verge of failure. These standards help you understand the urgency of recommendations, letting you make better service decisions.

It’s the goal of the team here at KENSINGTON AUTO to provide fast, courteous service. Calgary drivers should feel free to ask us any questions about your vehicle's service or manufacturer recommendations.

Well-trained service providers, established procedures, and industry standards combined to give you the best service experience possible.

           Question:

What is a severe service maintenance schedule?

KENSINGTON AUTO Answer:

When I was a kid in, Sunday meant having a bath, getting dressed for church and then hanging up my Sunday clothes as soon as we got home. Mom didn’t have to wash those clothes but once a month or so.

Now, Saturdays were another story entirely: catching lizards, splash contests in mud puddles and crawling through the brush. Those clothes went straight into the laundry basket. My Sunday clothes, easy use. My Saturday clothes, hard use. They required a different laundry schedule. Severe service maintenance schedules are kind of like that for Calgary drivers. “Normal” driving has a regular schedule; “hard” driving has a severe service schedule. Service intervals are shorter on the severe schedule.

Most owner’s manuals will describe severe service as:

Stop and go driving
Short trips
Low speed driving
Extreme hot or cold
Dusty conditions
Carrying heavy loads
Towing

For most Calgary people, some “severe” driving is part of their everyday routine. You can talk to your KENSINGTON AUTO service advisor about how you drive around the Calgary area and see if your routine is closer to the regular or severe definitions and adjust your service intervals for things like oil changes, transmission and cooling system service.

Let’s review some things that Calgary drivers can do to improve fuel economy. Bottom line is, the better you maintain your vehicle, the less fuel you will use. It all adds up in a big way. For example, replacing your dirty engine air filter will pay for itself in fuel savings before your next oil change and will keep saving you money after that.

A clean, well-maintained fuel system really pays big dividends for budget conscious Calgary drivers. A clogged fuel filter wastes fuel. So does a dirty fuel system, grimy fuel injectors and plugged up PCV valves. A fuel system service decreases the fuel you use, and increases the power so you can’t go wrong with that.

Some of us Calgary drivers ignore our check engine light. But fixing the problem that caused the light to come on will usually save some fuel as well. It may be a bad oxygen sensor that can really rob your fuel economy.

And, it may be time for a tune-up. Tune-ups should improve your fuel economy. Don’t overlook the routine maintenance items, like scheduled oil changes, transmission and cooling system service. Dirty or low fluids actually use more fuel. Just look at your car maker’s recommended service intervals in the owner’s manual, or ask your KENSINGTON AUTO service advisor for the schedule.

Don’t forget your tires. Under inflated tires waste fuel. And if your wheels are out of alignment you won’t get the fuel economy you need.

Be sure to get a new fuel cap if yours leaks or is worn.

None of these things are very complicated or expensive for Calgary drivers to stay on top of. When you maintain your car properly, you save fuel today and prevent pricey repairs tomorrow.

Kensington Auto Tips:

           Batteries and Alternators

Your alternator makes electricity to start and run your engine and all of the electrical systems in your vehicle. That’s everything from the on-board computers to the turn signals. And of course there is the entertainment system, seat heaters, power windows, and everything you plug into the power outlets. After your alternator makes enough electricity to do all that, it recharges your battery with what’s left over.

When Calgary drivers constantly have a low or dead battery, the alternator is usually a prime suspect. However, the alternator is just one component of the starting/charging system and a problem with any of the other components could be the actual cause.

In addition to the alternator, the charging/starting system includes the battery, starter, serpentine belt system, and all of the electrical cables that connect them. Your technician has a systematic process of testing components and connections to get to the source of your problem. The initial symptoms determine where to begin the diagnostic process and he follows the procedure until he tracks down the culprit.

For example, diagnostic tests at KENSINGTON AUTO could reveal that the alternator is not generating enough electricity to keep the battery charged. Is the alternator bad? Not necessarily. A worn serpentine belt tensioner could be allowing the belt that spins the alternator to slip. So the perfectly good alternator is not spinning at the proper speed. The solution is replacing the serpentine belt system – not the alternator.

4 Ways to Help Your Vehicle Service Go Well

Vehicle Servicing Makes Your Vehicle Last Longer

Let's face it, vehicles are complex machines, and hats off to the technicians who can diagnose and repair them when things go wrong. Here are four tips to follow when you take your vehicle in, according to service advisors and technicians.

Describe the problem thoroughly and accurately. When you tell friends how your day at work was, you probably go into a fair amount of detail: the boss yelled at you because you were late, the computer froze up and lost five reports you were working on, and you over-microwaved your lunch. Details, details, details. The same works when you're telling your Service Advisor the issues you are having with your vehicle. Give as many facts as you can. Did you smell something burning? Did your vehicle make a noise? Where was the noise coming from and sounds does it make? Your powers of observation can be very helpful. Consider writing these things down so when the Service Advisor is writing up your vehicle, you won't forget anything.

Make sure your vehicle is T-C-E: tidy, clean and empty. There's a practical and a psychological reason for this. The practical reason is the technician may have to access several areas of your vehicle to diagnose and fix the issues. If your trunk is full, for example, the technician may not be able to reach the battery that is back there. Or if there are toys piled in the passenger seat footwell, the technician may not be able to get to the components under the dash. So, keep those areas tidy and empty. The technician will also appreciate a clean space in which to work. The psychological reason is that it demonstrates that you care about your vehicle's appearance and condition. Taking it in for service means you also care about function, too, and you want everything to work the way it should.

Be sure to remove personal items that you want to keep private from the glove box and other areas. It is a good idea to remove medications. Those who have a legally concealed weapon should not leave it anywhere in the vehicle.

Don't "supervise" your technician when the work's being done. Several surveys have shown technicians work better and more efficiently when the customer isn't hanging around watching every move they make. If you drop off your vehicle, you'll be notified that it's time to pick it up. If you prefer to wait, head over to the waiting area, read, or get some work done.

Water Pump Replacement

No matter what the temperature is outside, it's important for your vehicle's engine to remain cool, calm, and collected. Well, cool, anyway. If your vehicle has a gasoline engine, it's powered by a bunch of explosions involving spark plugs, pistons, gasoline, and air. And the by-product of all those things working together? HEAT.

There's a whole cooling system to keep everything at a tolerable temperature for your engine's parts, and a key part of that is the water pump. Technically, it's pumping more than water. It should actually be called the "coolant" pump since the liquid that circulates through the system is a mixture of water and coolant.

Basically, the water pump keeps this coolant moving through your engine, where it picks up the engine heat, and then is pumped into the radiator where it gets rid of that heat. When a water pump fails, the engine heat can build up. When you get a warning light on the dash (either a gauge or a light) that shows the temperature is too high, it could mean a bad water pump.

They can fail for many reasons. They have bearings in them that wear out, as does the seal between the pump and the engine. They're often driven by a belt or chain that can go bad. Corrosion can spell the end of a water pump, too.

If a technician determines your water pump has failed, it's time to replace it. In addition, other components of the cooling system will be inspected. The best way to avoid a water pump failure is regular maintenance of your cooling system which includes regular draining and flushing of the coolant.

Just like it's important for you to keep your cool, the same goes for your vehicle's engine.

How to Remove a Seized Fuel Injector

The 3.5L Ford Eco Boost engine has grown in popularity in recent years and is overall a decently reliable engine. People love the fuel efficiency, power and towing capabilities.

On the Ford Transit Van layout however, there is a very common issue that has become a major headache for many owners.

The windshield cowling leaks, and water flows on to the engine beneath and causes a multitude of issues. The main issues being premature fuel injector failure and premature ignition coil failure. On top of that the water causes corrosion and can cause bolts to break and make repairs extremely difficult.

If you have not experienced these issues yet, we highly recommend you find a way to seal the cowling under your windshield before issues begin. We do this here at our shop, or if you google "Ford Transit water leaking on to engine" you will find people have made videos on how to fix this issue.

But if you do find yourself in a situation in which you have a bad fuel injector on a ford Transit, be prepared for what can be a brutal repair. More likely than not, the injector will be seized in to the head of your 3.5L Eco Boost.

The van specifically worked on in our scenario was a 2015 Ford Transit and what was supposed to be a simple injector change, turned out to need some creative solutions.

Once the intake is removed (a bolt broke on the intake as well due to corrosion), we went to remove the bad injectors. The injectors for Cylinders #2 & #3 would not come out and were seized in place. No injector puller could hold on tight enough to get them out either, not even the OE tool. At this point even the dealer will usually tell customers they have to replace the whole head due to the injector being so seized. While that may be the case at times, we found a couple of creative ways to get the seized injectors out that we wanted to share in case it can help you.

On injector #3 we were able to take a 7mm tap and thread it on to the top of the injector. Once solidly on there we had a piece of metal (actually a tire hook from our alignment machine) and ran it across over top of the injector. We then used a small puller to press against that metal and pull on the tap that was threaded to the injector. This worked out great and we managed to get injector #3 out with this method.

Injector #2 was even more seized in place, and when we attempted the same thing, the top post of the injector actually broke right off. We then took an 11mm bolt remover and hammered it on to the injector. Then using a breaker bar we were able to move it back and forth and get it turning in the head. Once turning we used a pry bar to pry up on the bolt remover socket and worked it out very slowly.

With all these methods you will have to be prepared to potentially still replace the head if something goes wrong. But in our case once we got them out we cleaned out the injector holes, installed new ones and everything worked perfectly.

A poor design on Ford's part, and hopefully you never have this issue. But if you do there is hope!

Of the things you think about most, your tires are probably pretty far down the list. That’s understandable because today’s tires are engineered to do their job without needing you to pay too much attention to them. But they DO wear out, and worn tires can contribute to skidding in bad weather, not being able to stop, a ride full of uncomfortable vibrations and, even a sudden blowout. Yikes. Let’s figure out right now how to know if your tires need replacing!

Let’s face it. Most of us don’t know the first thing about tires. So, the best way to make sure what shape yours are in is to take your vehicle to a qualified service facility to have the tires checked out by a trained technician. Here are things they’ll check:

Tread. Tread is the part of the tire that touches the road surface. Different tires have different tread patterns and something called tread blocks - the raised rubber parts that contact the road. The longer a tire has been on a vehicle, the more of that rubber wears off. The technician will check to see if there’s enough of that tread left on your tire for sufficient traction to accelerate, steer, and brake.

Pressure. It’s important your tires be inflated properly so your tires will perform the way they’re designed while driving. If your tires have low air pressure, the technician will check to see why, perhaps cracks in the sidewall from age, a nail in the rubber picked up on the road, or bulges. It’s also important your tires are not overinflated too.

Wear. Your tires should wear evenly. If they haven’t, the uneven wear can cause vibrations that you can feel in the steering wheel. Maybe the whole vehicle shakes at a certain speed. Your vehicle may require other services such as balancing, alignment, or suspension repairs to prevent future tire damage.

Age. Your tires may have adequate tread, but if they’re too old, it’s time for new. Rubber gets old, and when it does, it loses its elasticity. Ever find an old rubber band and tried to stretch it? It’s brittle and will break easily. Hotter climates will age rubber—and tires—faster. All tires have their date of manufacture stamped on them, so your service adviser will be able to see when your tires were made.

If it’s time to replace your tires, you’ll find you have many choices for new ones: different brands, models, designs, etc. Your service adviser can help you figure out which ones are right for you. It’s much better—and safer—to do it before one of them fails at the least opportune time.

Suspension systems should continue to operate effectively for many years and tens of thousands of kilometers for Calgary drivers, holding your tires’ foot print on the road. Eventually components do wear out, but how long that takes depends a lot on how you drive around Calgary.

As you can imagine, if most of your driving is on smooth Calgary highways, your shock absorbers will last a lot longer than if you do most of your driving on bumpy roads in Calgary or hauling heavy loads. In addition to just wearing out, suspension components can be damaged in an accident or by a hard impact, like a pothole, hitting a curb or a rock on a back country Calgary area road.

Because the life span of shocks can vary so widely, your car maker recommends periodic shock inspections. During an inspection, your KENSINGTON AUTO service advisor will check for worn, broken or missing suspension parts.

If the inspection reveals any problems, take care of this important safety and handling work. We can help you at KENSINGTON AUTO in Calgary. When you replace your shocks, it’s usually a good idea to replace all four at the same time. That’ll give you even handling at all four corners of the vehicle.

If you have special road handling needs like improved cornering or towing or hauling requirements, your KENSINGTON AUTO service advisor can recommend upgraded shocks or struts to get you what you want.

Let's Clear Some Things Up (Headlight Restoration)

Get The Most Out Of Your Headlights

You know how exposing your skin to sunlight can cause sunburn and other unhealthy things. Sunlight can also create major problems for your headlights. After they've been exposed to ultraviolet light, acrylic headlights can yellow and fog due to oxidation. And when that happens, less light can pass through the plastic, reducing the effectiveness—and safety—of your headlights.

It's not just the UV light that causes headlights to turn cloudy. Road grime and debris gets kicked up and can scratch the plastic, diffusing the light that should pass through them when they're clear. Plus, when your vehicle was new from the factory, the headlights had watertight seals all around to prevent moisture from getting into them and fogging them up with water vapor. Just like clouds can hide the sun, tiny water molecules can diffuse the light from your headlight bulbs.

Sure, you could buy replacement parts and start fresh. But the good news is many vehicle repair facilities can restore your original headlights to perform like they did when you first bought your vehicle. Here's how it works:

A technician will protect your vehicle's paint by either taking the headlights out or by taping off the paint near the headlights and leaving them in place.

Residue is removed from the headlight surfaces by wet sanding to remove the oxidized plastic.

Using special compounds, the technician will buff and polish the surface of the lens so it looks as smooth as glass.

The newly-polished plastic is then sealed with wax or a special sealant designed to keep them operating like new.

If the seals that keep the moisture out of the inside of your headlights have dried out or cracked, they will be restored or replaced to keep condensation from forming again.

Visibility at night is vital for safe driving, and if your headlights aren't performing up to their potential, the less you'll be able to see ahead of you.

There are many advantages of having your headlights restored rather than buying new or aftermarket replacements. It's friendlier to the planet since plastics are made of oil, so it's reducing the amount of plastic that is manufactured. And it's usually less expensive to have your headlights restored rather than replaced.

Consider headlight restoration a way to literally recycle those parts of your vehicle. That seems to be perfectly clear!
